Thoughts on the Rennaisance album…

I realized that I am part of the Beehive. I’ve rocked with Beyonce since day 1, and although I haven’t been enthusiastic about all her work, I’ve always respected it and learned to love it later.

Renaissance was the album I never imagined needing. It was initially hard for me to get into the songs because it was different and “thought” I couldn’t identify with the songs or lyrics, but the concert provided a whole other level of understanding. The level of excitement was contagious and the love radiating from everyone was amazing. Concert goers came from all genders and backgrounds, which is a testament of how Beyonce’s music is truly universal and resonates with everyone. But what was most evident is how everyone was free to be their authentic selves, moving me at times. It felt good to be in a space like that, and it was there that I understood the importance of her album and how it resonated within me.

The Renaissance album promotes self-love. And it’s not necessarily about identifying and embracing your flaws, but rather emphasizing the best parts of you. Basically, it’s a hype album and commands others to recognize and respect your greatness. I’ve never felt so empowered after leaving her concert.

Then I saw the movie and it literally brought me to tears during different moments. Beyonce grew up in front my eyes and I whole heartedly respect the woman she’s become. She’s always been reserved about her personal life, but in the movie, she speaks her mind and opens in a way I’ve never seen. She spoke about the difficulties of maneuvering in a man-driven industry as a Black Woman, striving for respect and others to match her work ethic, all while balancing Motherhood. I understand why the Beehive calls her Mother, as she’s been nurturing her audience for quite some time. She is unapologetic about her music and work ethic which is both empowering and resonates with the younger generation.

One of the realest parts of the movie was when she talks about Blu joining the show. Beyonce wasn’t initially keen on the idea, but Blu persisted, and she eventually agreed to one show. She talks about the hard work Blu put into learning the routine and thought she was emotionally ready until right before Blu hit the stage for the first time. They were both going up the lift and Bey mentioned that she saw Blu’s silhouette and was about to pass out because she knew how nervous she was. I felt every bit of this and brought me back to the first time Alayna performed at her school’s talent show. She was standing on stage waiting for the music to start, and I could see all the nerves and my stomach flipped- flopped. I just wanted to grab and hold her, but she pulled through and performed like a pro. Her performance literally took my breath away, and I couldn’t have been prouder. I can’t count how many times I was filled with nervousness when my daughters were about to perform- whether it’s cheer, dance, orchestra or sports. To this day I wish I could absorb all their nervousness and self-doubt so they could be confident going through life.

Blu was alongside her mom throughout the whole process of planning the tour and eventually gained a larger part of the show. She’s absorbing all of Beyonce’s wisdom and will be a force to reckon with. But Beyonce’s confidence and knowledge reached beyond Blu and to her entire fan base, empowering others to unapologetically be the best version of themselves- for themselves.
