This month will be 4 years since my sweet girl passed away and a day doesn’t go by when I don’t think about her. She was the most docile and laid-back dog I’ve known and was super sweet to everyone. But she never played about her snacks, especially apples. Whenever my Mom visited, she would relentlessly fuss until she gets her apples lol. Sable was a mess! What I miss the most was how she followed me around and was content with just cuddling up where ever I landed. She grew up with my daughters and always a part of my family’s journeys, experiencing her “firsts” as we did as well. She’s a part of the original Fab 5 Francis and we miss her dearly.
It was obvious that Sable knew she was so special that she sent two dogs to replace her. We rescued Cooper and Joey the following year and both exhibit parts of her personality. Like Sable, Cooper is my shadow and is completely content just following wherever I go. Joey is super laid back and loves everyone. They both are possessive of me and will ask for their snacks every day. The boys have found a way to fill our hearts once again and keep us on our toes.
After Sable’s passing, I always wondered how our hearts will heal, and honestly, I don’t know if I should even expect it. I just try to find ways to comfort myself on days when I miss her the most. I often tell the boys about Sable and let them sniff some of her old toys. Yeah, it may sound corny, but I’d like to believe they understand.
One day I ran across The Rainbow Bridge story and immediately felt comfort knowing that I can hold her in my arms once again. Losing a fur baby is one of the hardest hurts to go through, so I’m sharing the story with hopes it may comfort others. For myself, I hope my arms are full of all my fur friends 😊
“Just this side of heaven is a place called The Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to The Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross The Rainbow Bridge together….”
